YMCA Program Offerings

An Overview of the Program:

Program Objectives
a. Improve students’ academic performance
b. Improve student attendance
c. Improve social skills
d. Improve ability to resolve conflict
e. Reduce student suspensions


The Program
On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, students attend homework assistance classes for one hour and fifteen minutes. A teacher from each grade level, familiar with the daily homework, assists the students. After homework assistance, the students are provided with a nutritional snack from a menu they help to develop. After snacks, students have time to participate in enrichment activities of their choice. The activities include computers, instrumental music, arts and crafts, Charm Club, basketball, swimming, football, service learning, discussion groups, table games, debate team, and chess club. Mondays are partner days. Our partners provide various services as well as staff to supervise them. Community Law in Action (Youth Advocacy,) Peabody Conservatory (Instrumental Music,) and Clayworks (Arts). On Fridays, there are no homework assistance classes. Students are allowed to socialize and participate in various planned activities, (i.e. dances, talent shows, drawings for prizes, and listening to music).

Bus Transportation:
Students are transported to drop-off points located in the communities surrounding Dunbar Middle school at the end of the After School Program.



 

Family Night:
Once a month, the entire family is invited to a dinner. Parents have an opportunity to talk with staff about their child, fellowship with other families, win prizes, and enjoy student performances.

Field Trips:
Once a month, students attend a field trip. These trips include bowling, roller skating, theatrical productions, and YMCA Teen Nights.
